Generative Engine Optimization Agency: How to Choose One in 2026
A generative engine optimization agency gets your company named, described accurately and cited when buyers ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI features for recommendations. The best ones do it by building evidence in the places AI systems draw from: earned media, podcasts, communities, original research and a site that is easy to crawl. They report on delivery, not on promises. If an agency guarantees a specific model response, walk away.
This guide is for seed to Series B founders and growth-stage executives who are about to hire. It covers what GEO is, what an agency can and cannot control, how to vet providers, and how we approach the work at Storyline Pros.
TL;DR
- GEO is the practice of earning mentions and citations inside AI-generated answers. It sits on top of SEO fundamentals and does not replace them.
- No agency controls what a model says. Google says it has no extra requirements for AI features and that inclusion is never guaranteed. Pay for transparent, measurable delivery instead.
- Third-party authority matters as much as your own site. Press, podcasts, Reddit and original reports are where AI answers learn who you are.
- Vet agencies on named case studies, baselines, query sets, methodology and attribution. Most providers publish none of these.
- Our model is built around that: narrative engineering, GEOview AI Visibility Technology and a performance-based guarantee tied to delivered placements.

What a generative engine optimization agency actually does
The label covers very different businesses. Some are SEO shops that added “GEO” to the service menu. Some are content mills. A few are PR and authority firms that understand why AI answers cite what they cite.
Google’s own description of the discipline is plain. Its guidance says SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no special markup or file required to appear. So a credible agency work plan has four parts:
- Category analysis. Which questions do buyers in your category ask AI engines, who gets named today, and what sources do those answers rely on?
- Evidence creation. Original data, customer proof, technical explainers and a clear point of view that journalists and models can distinguish from commodity content.
- Distribution into trusted sources. Tier-one and trade media, podcasts, community discussions, reports and listicles that third parties publish about you.
- Measurement. Tracking whether your brand is named, how it is characterized, which sources are cited and what that does to pipeline.
If a proposal is mostly step two at high volume, be careful. Google’s guidance says unique, people-first content matters more than volume, and it warns that scaled pages made to manipulate AI results can violate spam policies.
Why the decision is made before the click
Buyers increasingly read the answer and never visit a site. Pew Research analyzed browsing data from 900 U.S. adults and found that 58% had at least one Google search in March 2025 that produced an AI summary. Users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when a summary appeared, against 15% when it did not. Clicks on links inside the summary itself happened on just 1% of visits.
Two conclusions follow for a founder:
- Being named inside the answer is its own objective. If the answer shortlists three vendors and you are not one of them, ranking tenth below it does little.
- Last-click analytics undercount the effect. Someone who sees your company recommended and later types your name into the browser shows up as direct traffic. A good agency reports visibility, cited sources, qualified actions and pipeline as separate lines rather than treating every mention as a conversion.
Where AI answers get their information
AI summaries cite several sources at once. In the same Pew data, 88% of summaries cited three or more sources and only 1% cited a single one. Pew also found Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together made up 15% of the cited sources it examined (as summarized in our research brief from Google’s optimization guide and Pew’s analysis).
The practical reading: a model builds its picture of your company from many independent places. One well-optimized homepage is not enough. A pattern of consistent, credible references across media, video, audio and community is.
That is why we describe our work as a 6-channel ecosystem:
| Channel | What it contributes to AI visibility |
|---|---|
| Earned media placements | Credibility from publications models and journalists already trust |
| Podcast guest spots | Transcripts and episode pages that tie your founders to your category |
| Reddit community amplification | Genuine participation in the discussions AI answers frequently draw on |
| Listicles and original reports | Citable comparisons and data that others reference |
| AI search optimization | Evidence pages and crawlable site content that match real buyer questions |
| Programmatic news syndication | Broader, tracked distribution of milestones across news surfaces |
Each channel reinforces the others. A funding announcement becomes a media story, a podcast conversation, a community thread and a data point in a report, all saying the same true thing about your company.
GEO vs SEO: what changes and what does not
GEO is not a replacement for SEO. Crawlability, indexing, helpful content and a technically sound site still decide whether your pages can be used at all. Google states that its AI features rely on the same foundations as search, and that compliant pages may still not be crawled, indexed or served.
What changes is the scoreboard and the lever:
- Scoreboard. SEO tracks rankings and clicks. GEO tracks citation share, brand mentions, sentiment and accuracy of how models describe you.
- Lever. SEO leans on your own pages and links. GEO leans harder on what others say about you, and on whether those statements agree.
- Time horizon. Earned authority compounds. Placements published this quarter can keep being retrieved long after a campaign ends.

What no agency can promise
Here is the line between a serious agency and a risky one. Models are probabilistic, and platforms change how they retrieve and cite. Google itself says indexing and serving are not guaranteed even for compliant pages. Any firm guaranteeing that ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Google will name you is promising something it does not control.
What can be guaranteed is delivery: a defined number of placements, podcast appearances or syndicated pieces, produced and published, with the results measured. That is the logic behind our performance-based guarantee. You are not paying for hours or a monthly report about activity. You are paying for outcomes we can show you, billed per delivered placement, appearance or syndicated piece.
This matters because the market is thin on proof. A 2026 audit of AEO providers found that only 106 of 355 eligible providers published any client proof of AI-search results, while 232 claimed AI outcomes without an example or a number. Treat that as a reminder to ask for evidence, whoever you hire.
How to vet a GEO agency: seven questions
Bring these to every call, including ours.
- Can I see a named case study? Not “a SaaS client.” A company you can look up, with results you can verify.
- What was the baseline? Before-and-after claims mean nothing without a starting point for mentions and citations.
- Which queries do you track, and who chose them? The query set should come from your buyers’ real questions, not from queries chosen because you already win them.
- What is the methodology? Which engines, how often, how many runs per query. Results vary between runs, so one screenshot proves little.
- How do you report? Visibility, cited sources, qualified actions and pipeline should be separate.
- How is attribution handled? Ask how mentions in AI answers are connected to demos and revenue, given that clicks undercount influence.
- What exactly do I get billed for, and what happens if it is not delivered? Retainers that bill for effort regardless of output shift all the risk to you.
A short checklist for red flags: guaranteed model inclusion, a secret markup or schema trick, hundreds of AI-written pages, and no named clients. Google says no special schema is needed for AI features, so a pitch built on one is a pitch built on nothing.
Our perspective: narrative engineering comes first
We started Storyline Pros because we saw capable startups stay invisible while weaker competitors got the coverage. Both of us co-founded and exited tech companies, and we know how it feels when the product is ready and the market has not noticed.
Here is what we have concluded about GEO.
Models repeat what the ecosystem agrees on. If your positioning is different on your site, in your last press piece and on your founder’s podcast, AI answers will reflect the muddle. We call the discipline of fixing that narrative engineering: deciding what your company should be known for, then turning milestones into coverage, conversations and citable evidence that say it consistently. It is the reason we are not a conventional PR retainer. You can read the difference on our page on narrative engineering versus PR.
Measurement has to come from the same place as the work. Our GEOview AI Visibility Technology tracks how your brand appears across AI search engines and ties placements to measurable impact. You can see how it works on the GEOview page. Without it, every campaign is a guess about what is moving the needle.

Startups should be paid for results. Early-stage teams cannot afford to fund months of activity and hope. We bill per delivered media placement, podcast appearance or syndicated piece, and offer pilot, project and monthly engagement options so you can start small and see output first.
Evidence beats volume. The startups that get cited have something real to cite: a proprietary data point, a customer outcome, a founder with an opinion. Our job is to find it, shape it and put it where it will be found.

What to do before you hire anyone
You can improve your odds regardless of agency. Do these first.
Run a category analysis
Ask the major AI engines the ten questions your best buyers ask before they talk to sales. Record who is named, how they are described and which sources appear. This gives you a baseline, and it shows you which publications and communities shape your category.
Fix the basics on your own site
Make sure important pages can be crawled and indexed, that your company description is identical everywhere, and that your product pages answer specific buyer questions. Our piece on AI search optimization with evidence pages explains what a page worth citing looks like.
Create something original
A benchmark, a small survey, a teardown of customer results. If you produce visuals or demo content to go with it, tools like an AI studio for generating videos and images from prompts can help you draft distinctive assets quickly, though the substance still has to be your own data and point of view.
Decide what you want to be known for
Pick one category claim you can defend. A GEO strategy with five positioning statements produces five weak signals. If you are unsure how to frame it, our explainer on narrative engineering for startups walks through how founders earn coverage.
How an engagement with us works
We keep the process simple so you can judge it fast:
- Category analysis. We map how AI search engines currently describe your category and where you stand.
- GEO strategy. We choose the narrative, the channels and the target placements that fit your stage and milestones.
- Delivery across the 6-channel ecosystem. Media, podcasts, community, reports and listicles, optimization and syndication, sequenced around your news.
- Tracking and attribution. GEOview AI Visibility Technology measures what was delivered and what it changed.

FAQ
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO aims to rank your pages in traditional results. GEO aims to get your brand named and cited inside AI-generated answers. They share foundations such as crawlable, helpful content, but GEO puts more weight on third-party references and on measuring mentions rather than only rankings.
Can an agency guarantee my company will appear in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says that even compliant pages may not be crawled, indexed or served, and other platforms are no more predictable. A trustworthy agency guarantees what it controls, such as delivered placements and transparent reporting, and explains how those placements raise your chances of being cited.
How long does it take to see results?
It depends on your category, your starting authority and how quickly placements publish. Earned media and podcast features can go live within weeks of pitching, but changes in how AI engines describe you build over repeated tracking. Ask any agency for a baseline so progress can be measured rather than assumed.
Do I still need SEO if I hire a GEO agency?
Yes. Google says SEO best practices remain relevant for its AI features. Strong fundamentals make your own pages usable, and GEO work adds the external authority that gets you mentioned alongside them.
How should I compare GEO agency proposals?
Compare them on named case studies, baselines, tracked queries, methodology, reporting and attribution, and on how billing connects to delivery. A proposal that cannot answer those is selling a label rather than a service.
